The annual SAMA Topless in Miami event 6-1-17

Sunshine is essential to healthy living. Studies show that a certain amount of exposure to direct sunlight daily helps your body set its circadian rhythm, maintain your psychological well-being, and even preserve a strong bone structure.

We get a lot of sunshine in Florida, hence its nickname The Sunshine State, and on June 1st, the Southern Automotive Media Association held its annual Topless in Miami event, where journalists got the opportunity to put themselves behind the wheel of some of the best convertible (and also hardtop) offerings car manufacturers currently have available.

Driving over a half-dozen brand-new cars in a matter of hours certainly sounded healthy for my automotive enthusiasm, and the sunlight exposure would be healthy for me physiologically. So it was a two-for-one deal.

I began my journey in the wee hours of the morning to Key Biscayne, just off the Florida mainland southeast of Miami, to the Ritz-Carlton luxury resort, where SAMA had a collection of freshly cleaned and polished cars for us to drive and score, and for people like me to cruise past the lines of palm trees trying to look like I have a clue about Miami style.

The rules were simple: drive as many cars as you can, rate them all after you’ve driven them, and understand that any tickets you get out on the main road are your tickets.

I managed to do all that (without getting any tickets) and get some video footage of me driving each one.

The cars I was able to evaluate are as follows:

– The Volkswagen Beetle

– The Fiat 124 Spider Abarth

– The Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible

– The Mazda Miata

Check out my videos of each car as I take them around Key Biscayne to find out what they’re like to drive:

It was a treat to drive all these cars, but my personal pick for the winner of Topless in Miami 2017 is the Mazda Miata.

Mazda changed the sports car world forever with the Miata in 1989, and the formula continues to succeed nearly 30 years later. It may not be the fastest, or the flashiest, or the most elegant car I drove at the event, but it’s undoubtedly the most fun, and an endearing sign that automakers are listening to us, the automotive enthusiast.

I want to thank all the people at SAMA for putting on the wonderful Topless in Miami event and giving me the opportunity to put myself behind the wheel of such a wide variety of cars in just one day.

Oh, and for giving me a chance to get a tan.
